Semi Ajayi header got West Brom a point as they drew 1-1 against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Marcus Bettinelli’s error allowed afterwards Anthony Knockaert had brilliantly put his side in front four minutes, Ajayi to head home after 80 minutes in the Sky Bet Championship clash on Saturday.
It meant though they remain a little off the pace of the group leaders, the spoils were shared between two of the promotion favourites.
Fulham dominated the first half and had a couple decent chances. It had been Tom Cairney who found his way through, was fed by Harrison Reed, while in the half Sam Johnstone was called upon to deny Knockaert and Bobby Reid in succession but he rattled the bar with his effort.
West Brom were pleased to sit back but failed to carve out a chance. Charlie Austin particularly had two half chances to score, even the initial on 28 minutes which he acrobatically smashed on the bar, the second seven minutes before the rest as he led Matt Phillips’ free-kick directly into the arms of Bettinelli.
It required a bit of magic shortly after half-time for Knockaert to break the deadlock. Whether he meant it or not is another thing altogether, however, the winger managed to discover the corner from the edge of the box which left Johnstone with a beautiful dinked effort.
Bettinelli, who was in excellent shape all afternoon before he gifted them their equaliser with 10 minutes to go wasn’t actually threatened by west Brom. His attempt to get a corner apparent watched him hand the ball into the path of Ajayi, that had an empty net to head the ball to.
Reed is on his third party loan stint in the Sky Bet Championship, seems to be becoming a quality midfielder at the level, and with spent campaigns at Blackburn and Norwich. He aided control the match for large swathes of the action at Craven Cottage with his metronomic passing. As it stands he’s maintaining stalwarts Stefan Johansen and Kevin McDonald on the seat.
Fulham visit Sheffield Wednesday at 3pm next Saturday. West Brom are to Huddersfield on Sunday 22 at 12pm, live on Sky Sports Football.
