In his most recent column for Sky Sports, Jason Roy reflects Ben Stokes’ Headingley heroics, his DJ setup afterwards and discusses his transfer No 4 in the purchase and he hopes it’ll win him a Tottenham Hotspur shirt…
Stokesy’s hundred at Headingley is 100 per cent.
The same as the World Cup final win’s craziness, it leaves you kind of lost for words. It was ridiculous.
Getting bowled out in the first innings to 67 was very disheartening and it was going to be challenging from there out there. We thought we would end up in the position we were in for this day of the Exam, let alone win it.
But there was lots of stuff said, like’while Stokesy’s still there, we’ve got a chance’.
I had lost confidence – 73 runs needed, with just one wicket left? I’d started packing my equipment up, and then Stokesy hit a few sixes.
I thought,’this is going to be great to watch, whatever the outcome’, so that I went and stood in the balcony, holding the back of a chair, with a few of the lads around me.
I’m not a huge believer in this sort of stuff but, from that point on, no one moved.
Maybe between chunks you would have a very small bit of a walk around but, when the bowler was back at the very top of the run, it was back to my seat.
By about as early as 40 runs still needed, everyone in the changing room started to possess exactly the same feeling; he’s going to do so. His influence and the attack he showed, hitting sixes rotating .
Clearly things went our way – we won’t shy – with the run-out that was near which Nathan Lyon fumbled.

Leachy can’t talk about it. I stated , I feel the exact same way about the chunk that I fielded for the. It keeps me awake during the night.
But he deserves a enormous amount of the plaudits for his role in the win and had been amazing.
As Stokesy, I really don’t know how he had the power for. He was only in this frame of mind in which nothing went to prevent him. He didn’t show much emotion – that he had been concentrating in any way times on the task in hand – and you may see the toll that required by the end, he had been absolutely completed!
We lads from the room were tired, moving through of the emotions. He should have been running pure adrenaline, also McDonald’s by the close of the day!
As I begun heading back home by that point, however, sitting to the outfield as a group, observing after one of the greatest Test matches of all time, was an incredible moment, I missed out on this trip.
These are the times that you and the game play with . There wasn’t too much talk, we were taking it all in; it was a gorgeous day, with the sun going down and it was quiet, yet only a couple of hours ahead there was absolute carnage.
Leachy is the very humble bloke from the room however, after a couple of beers, we were able to spur on him to re-enact his game-tying run. Meanwhile, I was in charge of the tunes for a bit.
It slowed down and threw into a little Lewis Capaldi towards the finish, although there was some hip hop, which is much more my type of vibe.
This past week, Continuing on to the Old Trafford Test, there is the feeling round the team that the momentum is with us. The lads are fired and now believe anything can be possible.
But on a personal note, my form has been frustrating. I have found it hard, although I understood that opening the batting in Test cricket was definitely going to be totally distinct to unmarried cricket.
Coming into the Test arena off the back of the World Cup – atmosphere mentally and physically drained – I’ve been trying to learn at work and work my way while enjoying out.
I have been going out to bat, facing some balls and thinking,’this is functioning’ and I’ll get a push ball, or a ball that I nick, and you need to begin all over again innings.
Individuals have left their conclusions, saying’he is not a Test participant’ and this kind of stuff. I believe I am, and can be, and moving down to the order to # 4 to this Test, emotionally it’s much more comforting. You receive time to ease to an innings.
That’s not to say it is going to be easy. This is the ideal attack I’ve ever confronted; they’ve a relentless group of tall bowlers, who all operate up at or close to 90mph. They are so persistent; they do not appear to miss their own areas.
But, as a top notch apparatus, we’re hungry. That is a fantastic feeling, especially considering how deep we are in the amount of cricket that’s been played and the entire year.
The next innings at Headingley will be 100 per cent our template going forward. In an ideal world, you’d need one batsman to go big with Stokesy, to push for the big 400, 450 plus totals and it would be fantastic if I could contribute and receive a big score in those next two Tests.
My woman Everly is a Tottenham fan, although they sent him after his hundred; Stokesy has been showing off using the brand new shirt even if just to find out what I could get delivered to me from Tottenham Hotspur.
Throughout their Champions League game against Manchester City earlier in the year, I recall that she was yelling and crying and crying, and then I flicked the soccer on and she stopped.
I said, when Tottenham win this match, she’s a Tottenham fan. She did not cry the whole game and, in my opinion, their conduct into the closing was down into her.
I am not the only one chomping at the bit this week. Jofra Archer is looking forward to building on his efforts at Headingley and so excited.
He’s excited to get moving, but so is everybody. We don’t need Stokesy’s effort to be for nothing and if we lose this match, it will be.
